CSR Lab

CSR Lab is a new initiative that CSCC has launched to nurture ideas and create solutions on corporate social responsibility in response to the mounting challenges faced by business leaders. Before we put our innovative ideas on CSR into practice, we examine them in our lab and aim to generate workable and sound solutions. Four project initiatives are undergoing in the lab:

Enterprises are facing pressures to comply with code of conducts, legal requirements and international standards in the area of workplace safety, human rights and environmental issues. Against this background, our pilot projects are aimed at improving enterprises productivity, product quality, worker-manager relations, capacity of workforce, and occupational health and safety conditions in factories. The pilot projects are initiated to strengthen the capacity of factories to build long-term CSR strategies in coping with the demands from buyers and consumers.

Article/ Book List

At the ‘International Seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility’ organized by the Institute of Labor Law and Social Security Law of Peking University, we articulated a paradox: why have multinational corporations suddenly become ‘the promoter and defender of labor rights’ when they are frequently identified as the perpetrators of labor exploitation? Accusations of their exploitativeness are especially true given the globalization of the world economy, whereby national and local governments are pushed to weaken labor standards to avoid capital outflow and to attract foreign direct investment, resulting in a squeeze on wages and welfare.

Yet on the contrary, in the recent movement of ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ (‘CSR’), the multinational corporations (MNCs) now serve as ‘role models of good conduct’ and have become prestigious ‘corporate citizens’ and ‘caring corporations’. Nearly every week, there are numerous forums, talks and seminars presenting different viewpoints and case studies on this issue. In China, CSR is a booming industry.

Are the MNCs really shooting themselves in the feet? Let’s take a closer look at the nature and impact of this movement, especially its influence on the labor movement
